Brief History of Wallkill Lodge
The story begins with Hugh Barkley Bull, born in 1816, graduate of Union College in 1841, New York State Assemblyman in 1852, and Master Mason of Goshen Lodge No. 365 – W:. Bull, in the year 1866, decided to establish Wallkill Lodge in his hometown of Montgomery, New York.
M:.W:. Robert Holmes, Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York, granted dispensation for Wallkill Lodge to hold its first regular communication on December 7, 1866. The following year, Grand Lodge presented Wallkill with its official charter, on June 24, 1867, and was assigned the number 627. Growing membership forced Wallkill Lodge in 1878 to relocate from the Village of Montgomery to the booming industrial complex of Walden, New York. Regular communications were held on the third floor of the Fowler Building, when due to lack of space and heating issues the Lodge in 1893 relocated to the Masonic Temple on Main Street in Walden.
On June 7, 2021, M:.W:. William M. Sardone, Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York, attested under the Seal of Grand Lodge that Port Jervis Lodge No. 328 consolidate with Wallkill Lodge No. 627. After the merger, Wallkill maintained the name, location, and Lodge number. Port Jervis Lodge was chartered in 1853; W:. Alfred Barkley, their first Master, was born in 1814, and was a cousin to W:. Hugh Barkley Bull.
For over 150 years, Wallkill Lodge No. 627 has been a pillar of strength for our community and has helped shape men to become virtuous & industrious leaders.
